My Photography & Travel Guide to Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Germany

We decided to make a Christmas Market tour this December 2023. We visited Christmas Markets in Zurich, Colmar, Freiberg, Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Nuremberg, Dusseldorf, and Rothenberg ob der Tauber. Rothenberg was by far our favorite. The town is full of cobblestone streets, quaint little cafes, and historic, colorful buildings.

The town looks like it is right out of a fairytale. Once a year, the town transforms itself into a fairytale winter wonderland. They have had a Christmas Market since the 15th century.

When to Go?

While it's lovely to visit Rothenberg any time of year, I recommend going before Christmas to experience the Christmas market with all the lights and decorations.

The Christmas market is one of Germany's most beautiful Christmas Markets. As you walk through the streets, you will smell mulled wine, “Gluewein,” roasted chestnuts, and all sorts of delicious treats.

Where to Stay?

We stayed at the Hotel herrnschlösschen, and it was the perfect place to stay. It’s right by the city hall in the center of town. The hotel is more than 1000 years old, which boggles my mind. They only have 8 rooms, but they have a wonderful restaurant.

Where to Eat?

The restaurant in the Hotel Hernschlosschen was fantastic. We also really enjoyed Bäckerei-Konditorei-Café Walter Friedel e.K.

Photography Locations

The town is quite small. You can easily walk from one side to the other in about 10-15 minutes. While I was there, I concentrated on taking photos of the interesting doors, the Christmas Market, the historic homes, the ramparts, and the Plonlein.

The Doors of the City

For some reason, I just loved the doors of the homes in the village. They come in every shape and color you could imagine.

The Christmas Market

You definitely want to take photos of the Christmas Market. There is a very popular store in Germany called Kathe Wohlfahrt which originates from this town.

Walking Through the Town

I loved walking through the streets of the town. There are just so many charming spots to photograph. I loved the colors of the homes and their shapes.

Plönlein

This is the most photographed spot in the town. You will find lots of people coming only to photograph this spot. You can get a photograph early in the morning and evening without all the tourists.

The Ramparts

Finally, the Ramparts of the city are stunning and so well preserved. You can walk through the ancient doorways and along the ramparts.

I absolutely loved Rothenberg ob der Tauber.
